The gifts that keep on giving
Americans are wealthy and generous. Individuals account for $327 billion in giving each year, close to 70% of all donations. That far outpaces giving by corporations, foundations, or bequests.
Sure, our generosity is commendable, but are we truly making a difference? Are the charities we support aligned with our values and mission? Or are we prioritizing emotions over impact? The reality is that most of us are unaware of the motivations and desires behind our giving. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can change the narrative with a more strategic approach to philanthropy.
Strategic philanthropy, often misconstrued as a practice exclusive to the affluent, is, in fact, a powerful tool for all. It empowers donors to align their wishes with the tactics to make them come true. And it’s not as complex as it may seem. It’s simply a thoughtful and purposeful approach to generosity aimed at achieving tangible results through a repeatable process.
In his latest book, Patrick Huey, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy and author of History Lessons for the Modern Investor, explores the strategies and tactics for turning everyday charity into high-performance philanthropy.
"Patrick Huey has a capacious mind, an eye for telling anecdotes, and a gift for free association." - Alex Roland, Professor of History Emeritus at Duke University.
